How Laser Hair Removal Works

Laser hair removal uses an intense beam of light that selectively destroys the hair follicles by targeting the melanin (color) in the hair and thereby eliminating the root and blood flow to the hair at the base of the hair follicle.

The Candela laser is damaging the follicle enough to reduce the hair regrowth significantly; whilst leaving the surrounding tissue unaffected. During the treatment, you will feel a slight, hot pricking sensation in the treated area; this is the heat hitting the hair root.

However, this is soothed by the cooling system attached to the laser which blows cold air, as cool as you prefer at the same time to make the session more comfortable. Following the treatment there may be slight redness and little bumps for a short time, this can be soothed by applying aloe vera gel as many times as needed (each treatment room has Aloe Vera for you to use post-treatment)!.

Before starting your laser hair removal journey, we will conduct a free consultation with one of our experienced and highly trained Consultants. During the consultation, the consultant will explain the process to you, decide which laser will be used in appropriate settings, answer any questions you have and carries out a patch test on each area.

The skin test will ensure you are suitable for laser hair removal (95% are eligible) as well as give you an idea of how the treatment will feel. The laser Consultant will then advise you on the best course of treatments to achieve your goal; The recommendation is a minimum of 8 usually. Our FAQs section below covers many of the aspects covered in the consultation. Following the consultation, if you choose to go ahead, you can start the treatment from as early as 48 hours later.

Following a laser hair removal treatment

The skin may be red immediately after the treatment, and the hair follicles where the skin has been treated may be raised and bumpy, this usually subsides within a few hours but can take up to 48 hours for some clients. A very few people experience itching a few days later as the hair is pushed out.

Following a laser hair removal treatment, the hair growth slows considerably. It usually takes 2-3 weeks at which point the dead hair will fall out. New hair follicles will then grow, which are usually less coarse. After the second laser treatment, depending on skin and hair type, the area can already begin to look patchy as certain hair follicles stop producing new hairs. After 4-6 treatments, the hair should be significantly reduced, and after 8 sessions, we can achieve up to 90% reduction.

Laser hair removal is the most effective method for achieving permanent reduction. After 6-8 sessions, you can achieve up to a 90% reduction. Compare this to a lifetime of shaving or waxing laser hair removal is an investment and more economical in the long run.

The laser is also extremely effective at treating ingrown hairs. After 2-4 sessions you will notice a significant if not complete removal of ingrown hairs. The bumps, redness and skin pigmentation caused by ingrown will also clear up as leaving the skin healthier and smoother.

Pre Laser Hair Removal Instructions

The area must be cleanly shaved within 24 hours prior to the treatment. Electric razors are not recommended as the hair is typically left too long.
Factor 30/50 must be worn on the area daily or the area has to be sufficiently covered with clothing to prevent UV exposure (Invisible Zinc is great for sensitive skin).
Do not tweeze, wax or pluck the area being treated between or prior to sessions. Only shave the area.
The treatment area needs to be free from make-up, lotion, deodorant and sun cream- inform the practitioner before treatment starts if you require wipes.
The area cannot be treated if it has been exposed to sun within 4 weeks prior to treatment.
Fake tanning products CANNOT be used 3-4 weeks prior to treatment; the area should be thoroughly exfoliated to remove all residues.
To reduce pain during treatment on small areas such as bikini and underarm, Emla 5% ( numbing cream) can be applied two hours before treatment to reduce discomfort. Copious amounts of the cream should be applied to the area. It MUST be covered with cling film or an adhesive non-stick dressing, this can all be purchased at a chemist.

Post Laser Hair Removal Instructions

Factor 30/50 must be worn on the area daily or the area has to be sufficiently covered with thick enough clothing to prevent UV exposure.
After the treatment, the area may be noticeably red (erythema) and may be swollen (edema) around each follicle. The area can be cooled again after the treatment to reduce the inflammation. This redness may last 2 hours up to several days after the treatment depending on the individual.
The hair will shed after the treatment within 1-3 weeks.
Do not tweeze, wax or pluck the area being treated between or prior to sessions. Only shave the area.
Exfoliation can be done to help the hairs shed faster (please wait a minimum of 1 week after the treatment to do this).
Hot showers and baths are not advisable for a minimum of 48 hours after the treatment. Only a cool shower should be taken.
Deodorant must be avoided for 12 hours, it can then be used so long as the skin is not irritated.
Exercise is not recommended for 48 hours after the treatment as this will reheat the area and may cause discomfort.
Itching after treatments may occur, topical hydrocortisone or Benadryl can be applied to alleviate this, or an oral antihistamine can be taken (Claritin is better for day use to prevent drowsiness).
If you change your medication you must inform the clinic more than 48 hours prior to treatment.
Your Practitioner will advise you on the gaps between treatments as they can vary on the area of the body and depending on the results from the previous treatment. Typically the face will be every 4 weeks and the body every 6-8 weeks.

Each area can vary depending on what body part you are planning to treat. For example, underarms can take 10 minutes, and half arms or lower legs from 20 minutes, full back and shoulders from 45 mins to full body which can take 2 hours.

How many sessions does laser hair removal take?

Usually between 8 sessions will get you up to 80% reduction of hair growth, this is mostly dependent on the area. For instance, lower legs usually require 8 sessions whereas the face requires 16-30 and sometimes more. All areas need top-up sessions to finish the areas off.
When you have completed 8 sessions you can book for a free review to help us to guide you how many more sessions you will need on each area and the frequency of the to ups. You will not maintain the result if you do not do the to up sessions at the end!

There can be some mild discomfort during laser hair removal treatment but it is often described as having an elastic band pinged against the skin.
The heat only hits the hair not the entire skin like waxing does, so most clients find laser a lot less painful and faster per session than waxing! As we destroy more hair it will become less painful!

What happens if you don't shave before laser hair removal?

In some cases, we ask clients not to shave a particular area so we can see where the specific hair growth is. We would then shave it off at the clinic, but in most cases, we require all clients to fully shave the area to be treated as the laser needs the full focus of its energy right through the hair follicles and also needs to impact the bulb of the hairs. If the hair is on the skin's surface, it is not suitable to treat over that hair without shaving as it is less effective, more of a risk to the skin, and it will be much more painful for the client.

Can I shave between laser sessions?

Yes of course on the body! On the face we request you leave the area between sessions so we can closely monitor the progress for you and use the best settings as the hair can get very light and thin quickly. The body is fine to shave if you see any growth.

Accepted Answer

This depends on the person's needs, although many notice long-term results with 6 to 8 treatments. Once someone completes the courses will enjoy hair-less and soft skin.

Yes, laser hair removal is suitable for darker skin types. This laser penetrates deeper than most lasers, missing the upper layers of skin where the skin pigment lies, therefore it is one of the safest lasers on the market for laser hair removal and side effects are very low!

Why is my hair still growing after laser hair removal?

Immediately after one laser treatment, the hair still sits inside the follicles and then over the course of around 2 weeks, the hairs push out the follicles as if still growing, but then they shed out the follicles completely.
If the hair is still growing after your recommended package, you would need to follow up with top-up treatments to weaken further the hairs' roots and the environment that grows them. Laser hair removal is not always 100% everything gone forever, so top-ups are recommended for the finer remaining hairs.

How soon after my course will I need top ups?

To answer this you will need to book a free review after your course is complete. The best time to book your review is 12 weeks after the final session on the body or 6 weeks on the face.
Most clients are aware from the consultation that the upper body has more hair follicles so it's usually best to start the second course of laser on the upper body/face straight after the first course finishes for optimum results.

Can I use hair removal cream instead of shaving before my laser?

Yes you can just leave 3 days before the appointment as hair removal creams can make the skin very sensitive. You must check the night before the session that there is no hair on the surface of the skin you will be having lasered or you will need to run over the area with a razor!

Can I bleach my face hair between sessions?

Accepted Answer

We prefer you not to do this as we do like to see the regrowth on the face at each session. However, if you have left a bigger interval, been in the sun and can’t have treatment for any reason then yes you can bleach. The hair is shaved off at the appointment so it won't affect your treatment. Please do not bleach 1 week before your session as your skin may be too sensitive to laser!

My hair is really thick and dark, will I need a lot more sessions?

No, the thicker and darker the hair the better for laser! If you have hormonal hair you will still see great results, but more frequent top-ups will be needed.

Can I tan between sessions?

Accepted Answer

Do not use sunbeds if you are having laser hair removal it can increase chances of side effects dramatically! Fake tan can be used up to 3 weeks prior to the next session but must all be removed or we will have to rebook your appointment. If you tan in the sun you will have to exfoliate the skin you are having treated and re book for a skin test.

We will not treat sun tanned skin. You must be at your natural skin tone for every session. If you tan easily, you need to be more cautious as it can affect the frequency of your treatments and therefore the results.

What is bad about laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal destroys the hair follicles on the targeted area. The skin reacts to this, and typically people present irritation and redness in the treated area. After the treatment, the skin might be tender and feel a tingle or may appear a slight swell. However, these side effects are temporary.

We recommend that a client starts with 8 treatments for any body area and then potentially do top-up treatments afterwards for the remaining hair growth.
